For Longview, Texas, builder Billy Summers, it was love at first sight. Having long endured the natural imperfections of solid wood, Summers found Temple-Inland TrimCraft engineered wood trim a real feast for the eyes.
“I’d had it with the problems of solid wood trim shrinking, cracking and not holding paint. So, short of getting mushy, I fell in love with TrimCraft when it was introduced,” says Summers, who has specialized in custom homes for the past 23 years.
That was several years ago. Now many homes later, he still loves it. Summers has had no failures, call backs or complaints from installers or painters. Because, unlike solid wood, there is no deterioration, warpage or paint problems. It's easily installed, so carpenters like it. It's preprimed, so painters like it, too, since it holds paint so well.
Like many builders, Billy has learned that TrimCraft is also economical. There is no waste factor when using it. TrimCraft delivers 16 feet of flawless material. No waste. No knots to cut around.
Summers uses the entire TrimCraft Cornice System in construction. In addition to TrimCraft 1 x 12s and 1 x 6s, he rips 1 x 4s for shingle trim.
The System is versatile. To solve the problem of varying overhangs created by the construction of the more aesthetic steep-pitched roofs (which eliminate the use of standard manufactured soffit), he simply rips 4 x 8 TrimCraft panels. Fascia birdboxes are built from 1 x 12s.
Ask Billy if he's ever been tempted by competitive products, and he'll shrug and tell you that because TrimCraft has worked so well for him, he's had no need to investigate anything else. He'll remind you that he's received no call backs from customers. No problems with fungus or insects. Therefore, no need or interest in other engineered wood products. “If you find something that good...stay with it,” he says. “I'm telling you, I don't mean to be mushy, but I fell in love with TrimCraft.”
