StructGuard™ TS, structural sheathing, debuts as mold- and fire-resistant alternative to OSB.

DIBOLL, TX -- Temple-Inland has introduced StructGuard™ TS, a structural sheathing that fights mold development while providing code-recognized racking resistance. It also meets all major model code requirements for structural strength. The addition of Temple-Inland’s TemShield® Mold Protection System, as well as the panel’s permeability and fire resistance, give it a unique performance advantage over OSB sheathing.

In addition to performance, StructGuard TS’s lower up-front material cost provides another advantage over OSB. With the dramatic fluctuations in the price of OSB, StructGuard TS’s consistent availability will mean substantial additional savings for builders.

To increase productivity, the panels are designed to be scored and cut using standard drywall tools. This removes the need for access to electricity or power tools during installation and cuts time, labor and expense dramatically. That type of convenience can be a real benefit to builders, says Jim Hannan, Gypsum Marketing Support Specialist.

“Construction crews save time by cutting StructGuard TS in place with utility knives. No one has to carry it to the saw. That really speeds up the work and makes everything more efficient. Installers can even hang an entire wall and then go back and cut out the openings. That’s a time saver too," said Hannan.

StructGuard TS features the TemShield Mold Protection System, which provided a significant degree of mold protection when tested per ASTM D3273 (Standard Test Method for Resistance to Growth of Mold on the Surface of Interior Coatings in an Environmental Chamber). TemShield contains an antimicrobial additive which that has been scientifically proven to inhibit the growth of a variety of microbes including mold.

Jim Hannan also commented on the importance of the mold- and water-resistant benefits of this product. Hannan said, “Mold and moisture issues and the risks they represent continue to pressure builders to reevaluate their material choices and construction methods to address this challenge responsibly. StructGuard TS provides a measurable level of mold and water resistance that is manufactured into each panel.”

Temple-Inland’s new StructGuard TS is available throughout their distribution network. Panels are manufactured in 1/2" and 5/8" thicknesses, a 4' width and lengths of 8', 9', 10' and 12' with square edges. For additional moisture and mold protection, each panel composed of an enhanced mold- and water-resistant core encased in mold- and water-resistant facers on both sides.
