When Temple-Inland was invited to work with Michael Holigan, the star of “Your New House,” on his latest Project House in Dallas, the company welcomed the opportunity.
Scaled to a generous Texas-sized 16,000 square feet, the home showcases the latest features, designs and innovations that every new home owner dreams of. More than 1000 sheets of Temple-Inland gypsum board made with synthetic gypsum provided the backdrop for this beautiful home, giving the walls the smooth, even finish demanded of today’s homeowner.
Longhorn Building Materials, a distributor of Temple-Inland products for three decades, used state-of-the-art equipment to unload and distribute the gypsum board. A variety of products were used in different areas of the home including 5/8" fire-rated gypsum board for the ceilings, 1/2" regular gypsum board for walls and 1/4" regular board for the many curves and arches in the home. Green board was used in the bathrooms because of its special water-resistant paper and formula.
The quality of Temple-Inland’s gypsum board made this large job run smoothly and yielded little waste for the installers. Rodger Theyer, technical advisor on the project, praises Temple-Inland for this quality and consistency.
“Temple-Inland is the best company that I have ever worked with for this type of product,” said Theyer. “The product itself seemed to be of a higher quality than others I have used, and the consistency is definitely better.”
And why is consistency a key issue?
“When purchasing large quantities of drywall, especially for projects this size, you can’t really look at all the product,” explains Theyer. “It is delivered in mass, and the best you can do is ‘spot inspect’ a few pieces. With Temple-Inland, we had no bad boards, so there was very little waste. That saves all of us time and money.”
The other big factor to Theyer and his team when installing gypsum board is a smooth edge. “The edges were really good and smooth. Again, very consistent.”
Michael Holigan watches as one of the gypsum boards is cut and is also impressed. “Wow, that is a clean edge,” he said. “You don’t normally see a piece of gypsum board cut that smooth.”
Smooth edges and consistent finishes are becoming more and more important to installers and homeowners alike. Popular paint finishes such as glazes, high-gloss finishes and darker wall colors can show a bad seam or other imperfections. A cleaner edge and smooth cut can make seams invisible.
The difference in the consistency is in the production.
Stephen Raley, Temple-Inland marketing manager for Gypsum Products, explains. “Because synthetic gypsum is extremely pure and has a very consistent particle size, board made with this raw material is also very uniform.”
“It is also environmentally responsible. The manufacturing of gypsum board made with synthetic gypsum actually converts waste byproducts into a high-quality, cost-efficient board. These products have between a 95% and 99% recycled material core and are covered with 100% recycled paper faces.”
“So we're definitely building green on this,” added Holigan. “We’re winning on all accounts.”
For Roger Theyer, one of the best parts of working on this project has been his experience working with the people at Temple-Inland. “Temple-Inland really cares about their employees and their customers,” explained Theyer. “They are really customer-oriented.”
He added, “And everybody I dealt with at Temple-Inland – from customer service reps to sales managers – they are all just super people.”
